Language Versions
Connect alternate language and regional pages so search engines understand which version belongs to which audience.
Overview
Language Versions is the Airygen SEO area for alternate language and regional page relationships.
Admin path: Airygen SEO -> Settings -> Language Versions
The current UI supports automatic mapping from multilingual plugins where available, and it also lets you add manual alternates yourself.
Settings
The page includes Mappings and Default.
Mappings
Use this section to manage alternate-language relationships.
- Airygen can use automatic mappings from supported multilingual tools such as WPML or Polylang.
- Add language creates a manual alternate entry.
- Language code stores the locale or region code, such as en-US.
- Language URL stores the matching page URL for that version.
- Remove deletes a manual alternate entry.
Default
Use this section to decide whether a general fallback version should be exposed.
- Include x-default adds a default fallback version for visitors whose language is not mapped above.
How to Use
- Open Airygen SEO -> Settings -> Language Versions.
- Review whether your site already has automatic mappings from a multilingual plugin before adding manual entries.
- Click Add language for any alternate pages that still need a manual relationship.
- Enter the correct Language code, then paste the matching Language URL for the equivalent page.
- Repeat the process only for true equivalent pages, not loosely related content.
- Turn on Include x-default only if your site has a clear default version that should act as the general fallback.
- Save the module and inspect the live page output or source to confirm the alternate versions are correct.
Verify these items after saving:
- Each alternate URL points to the equivalent page in another language or region.
- The language codes match the real audience you are targeting.
- x-default is used only when a general fallback truly exists.
- Automatic and manual mappings are not conflicting.
SEO Benefits
Correct language relationships help search engines show the right page to the right audience. They also reduce confusion when your site serves multiple languages or regional versions.
User Cases
Bilingual business websites
Before: English and another language version both exist, but search engines do not have a clear signal that they are equivalents.
After: The site owner maps the alternate URLs so each audience can be sent to the correct page version more reliably.
Regional ecommerce stores
Before: Similar pages exist for different countries, but country-specific URLs are not clearly connected.
After: The store team adds regional language codes and uses x-default for the main fallback page, which creates a cleaner regional structure.
FAQ
Do I need to add every page manually?
Not always. If your multilingual setup already creates automatic mappings, you may only need to add the missing ones manually.
What does x-default do?
It signals the fallback version for users whose language or region does not match one of the listed alternates.
Should I connect pages that are only loosely related?
No. Only connect pages that are true equivalents of each other for different audiences.
